The Best Duck Hunting Land in Texas

Texas is a great place for duck hunting. In fact, hunting duck and other waterfowl is one of the most popular forms of hunting in the state. You’ll find that there is a lot of public duck hunting land in Texas, which is probably one of the reasons that the sport is so popular.

Texas also boasts a long duck hunting season, with regular gun season running from late October until the end of January. During these months, you’ll find the best duck hunting lands in Texas filled with hunters each and every weekend, and on many days during the week. Texas has a plentiful duck population, which makes it easy for hunters to get a good catch at nearly every hunting opportunity. However, in order to keep the duck plentiful, there are bag restrictions when on duck hunting land in Texas.

Most years, the bag restriction on ducks is 5 per person per day, with the following species and sex restrictions - two scaup, two redhead, and two wood duck; only one from the following aggregate bag: one hen mallard, or one pintail, or one canvasback, or one "dusky duck" (mottled duck, Mexican-like duck, black duck, and their hybrids); all other ducks not listed - five. Specific restrictions can change from year to year, so you should check for this year’s restrictions at the beginning of the season.

Like most other states, Texas has general hunting laws and more specific laws pertaining to certain types of wildlife. Species specific restrictions include such items like bag restrictions and laws surrounding baiting of wildlife. All hunting requires a hunting license. You can purchase your license each year, or in some cases, apply for a lifetime license. In general, hunting licenses are not required for those under the age of 17.

Regulations can vary based on whether you’re on public or private duck hunting land in Texas, so it’s important to ensure that you know the rules before you go hunting. For example, hunters are not required to wear fluorescent orange when hunting on privately owned land, though it is recommended. However, 4 square inches of fluorescent orange clothing is required whenever you’re using public duck hunting land in Texas.

You’ll find few places in the US better for duck hunting than Texas. The climate is generally mild, the hunting regulations are fairly simple and the duck are plentiful. Duck hunting land in Texas is easy to find and some of the best in the country, whether public or private.
